Description

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced and technically proficient tax professional to join a leading private credit firm. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader, responsible for tax matters with specific emphasis on REITs and BDCs while also contributing to the broader tax team. This role requires an ability to navigate the specific regulatory frameworks of these specialized investment vehicles, and an understanding of partnership tax issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance: Manage the entire tax compliance lifecycle, from planning and preparation to estimates and filing. This includes overseeing all federal and state tax returns for the funds and their underlying entities, including Forms 1120-RIC, Form 1120-REIT, Form 8613, Form 1120, Form 1065 and other related filings. You will be coordinating and managing our outside tax preparers.
  • Internal Coordination. Work closely with the Accounting team to understand financial statement reporting, including regular review of accounting system and financial statement information to ensure the integrity of the reports for tax purposes.
  • Specialized Expertise: Ensure strict adherence to the tax requirements for both REITs and BDCs. This means monitoring the various asset, income, and diversification tests to maintain their tax-advantaged status while navigating the complex regulatory landscape of the Investment Company Act of 1940. You must be able to make determination on when a Taxable REIT Subsidiary (TRS) or Tax Blocker should be used to hold investments and liaise with 1940 Act counsel to solve structuring issues.
  • Investor Relations: Take charge of all tax-related investor reporting for these products, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of information. This includes managing the preparation and distribution of Schedules 1099, 1042‑S, and other essential investor documents.
  • Strategic Advisory: Act as the go-to tax expert for internal teams, providing clear, actionable advice on tax‑efficient structuring for new deals, dispositions, and other transactions. You'll be a key part of the team, providing a crucial tax perspective on investment activities.
  • Tax Planning: Proactively identify and implement tax‑saving strategies to maximize returns for the fund and its investors. This involves staying ahead of changes in tax law and proposing forward‑thinking solutions.
  • Audit Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for external tax advisors and auditors. You will be responsible for managing all tax audits and inquiries, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.

Requirements

  • Experience: 7+ years of relevant tax experience, preferably from a Big Four accounting firm or an in‑house role within an investment management company with BDCs and/or REITs.

  • Technical Proficiency:

Leads direct reports through clear goal setting, effective delegation, accountability, and consistent communication to ensure alignment with the Credit Union’s mission and objectives. Manages, coaches, develops, and inspires team to meet or exceed performance objectives and goals. This includes establishing development plans for future growth and succession planning. Develops and directs the administration of a multi‑million expense budget which includes staffing, negotiations, managing vendor relationships/expenses, analyzing reports, initiating process improvements, and reducing cost.
  • Holds managers accountable for financial performance and collaborative expectations. Reviews monthly cost center reports, perform ad‑hoc analysis and be closely involved in goal setting through the budget process. Sets goals, monitors work and evaluates results to ensure that departmental and organizational objectives and compliance requirements are met and are in line with the needs and mission of the organization. Continual assessment and optimization of our loan portfolio performance utilizing data analytics tools and insights to maximize our loan‑to‑deposit ratio. Maintains a high credit quality within the loan portfolio by continually evaluating underwriting standards, overseeing the ongoing monitoring of the loan portfolio, and aligning to our robust collections strategy to ensure proper risk rating and reserve levels.   • Responsible for loan policy, including periodic revisions and required annual approvals. Develops policy compliance reporting to ensure that all relevant policy limits are monitored and any differences are promptly addressed. Ensures that robust internal preventive and detective controls are in place and consistently maintained across Mortgage, Consumer, and Commercial Lending, as well as Card Services. This includes compliance with key regulatory requirements such as the Military Lending Act (MLA), Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), Fair Lending practices, and all applicable NCUA, state, and federal regulations.
  • Serves as chairperson of loan committee meetings. Addresses credit quality, loan approvals, internal reporting and any other matters requiring committee approval across all lines of business. Serves as chairperson of the Allowance for Loan Loss Reviews Committee meetings to ensure that reserves are adequate and in compliance with appropriate accounting guidance, regulatory needs and internal assessments.
  • Serves as a member of the ALCO Committee to ensure that the credit union maintains sufficient levels of capital, liquidity and profitability. Develops strong familiarity with loan production, prepayment speeds, growth and yield goals, Funds Transfer Pricing methods, Profitability reporting, Concentration Risk limits, credit quality metrics (including delinquency ratios) and other internal reporting. Presents loan product and pricing proposals for committee review. Responsible for the management and sales of all credit insurance products.
  • Ensures the Credit Union is in compliance with all lending regulations; develops procedural changes as compliance requires or new programs demand. Frequent interaction with NCUA examiners is required to ensure that all issues are understood, corrective actions are performed, and communications are appropriate. Ensures that any other internal or external audit findings are addressed promptly and appropriately. Collaborates closely with the Chief Strategy & Growth Officer (CSO) and other members of the leadership team, fostering strong cross‑functional partnerships to drive growth and enhance the member experience. Oversees the end‑to‑end lending experience, ensuring a seamless and consistent approach that supports sustained loan portfolio growth and long‑term member satisfaction.

Experience

Ten or more years’ experience in a financial institution with direct responsibility for lending functions required. Significant experience managing Consumer, Collections, Residential and/or Business lending functions required. Prior experience in managing or overseeing CUSOs is highly preferred. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader with extensive/progressive finance experience and relentless intellectual curiosity.
