Deep Centered Mental Health is a clinician-led outpatient psychiatry and psychotherapy practice built to support thoughtful, high-quality care. We emphasize an integrative approach—combining medication management, psychotherapy, lifestyle interventions, and advanced interventional treatments to help psychiatrists deliver more meaningful, lasting outcomes. Our model is intentionally designed to reduce administrative burden, allow for longer patient visits, and foster true collaboration across disciplines.

Psychiatrists in our group benefit from seamless access to a large, in-house therapy network and the ability to incorporate innovative treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS) and Spravato® into their practice. Your Role:

  • Evaluate and Diagnose: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and accurately diagnose mental health conditions.

Role Description:

The Regional Medical Director (RMD) will join Oak Street Health at a critical time in the history of our company and of primary care. The opportunity for impact is large and growing, with Oak Street Health leading the transition from fee-for-service to value-based care.

The RMD will be responsible for leading one of Oak Street’s large regions. They will partner with a Regional Vice President and report to an Executive Medical Director to achieve operational and clinical excellence and world class performance in hospital admissions, quality, patient satisfaction, clinician satisfaction, and medical cost. The RMD will practice primary care in our clinics 1.5 - 2 days per week. RMDs are key thought partners in providing feedback on our organization-wide clinical model.

Core Responsibilities:

In addition to caring for Oak Street patients, the RMD is responsible for the following leadership and administrative duties:

  • Partnership with the Regional VP or Senior RVP - Aligned and coordinated leadership is a critical requirement for the success of the RMD and of the region. The RMD and (S)RVP are jointly responsible for all clinical and financial outcomes for the region.

  • Medical Director Recruitment, Development, and Support : The RMD is responsible, either directly or through a Sr. Medical Director direct report, for recruiting, supervising and developing high performing Medical Directors for the region’s centers.

  • Clinician recruitment and retention : The RMD is accountable for the recruitment and retention of top clinical talent throughout the region, and the development of providers to support succession planning and recruitment for Medical Director roles.

  • Process Focused: The RMD will be expected to know, or rapidly attain, a deep knowledge of all of the processes and workflows which underlie the Oak Street Health Care Model. The RMD will use that knowledge to:

  • Continually teach providers, other clinicians, and center staff about the Oak Street Care Model and how to effectively implement it.

  • Assess the functioning of key center processes and workflows through data and direct observation to inform coaching and retraining opportunities for center leaders and staff.

  • Provide feedback and suggestions to central process owners / tool developers to assure continuous improvement across the organization.

  • Create Action through Others: The RMD must be effective at inspiring / supporting others to act. This includes making the needed “Calls to Action,” explaining the “why” and “how” for needed actions, and supporting / coaching team members to success.

  • External Partnerships: The RMD has primary responsibility, which may be delegated to others when appropriate, for the following regional clinical relationships:

  • Preferred specialists, health systems, clinical aspects of regional payer relationships, diagnostic testing facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, home health and hospice providers

  • Quality, Risk Adjustment, and Peer Review: The RMD has ultimate responsibility for regional quality outcomes, risk adjustment accuracy and regional peer review activities. The RMD is expected to have detailed knowledge of CMS / payer quality and risk adjustment programs and have experience with a range of tactics to optimize quality and support accurate clinical documentation of risk adjusting conditions.

  • Collaborate across Regions, Divisions, and the Organization . The RMD will invest in relationships with leaders across the organization to assure the coordination and consistency needed to achieve success at an ever increasing national scale. These collaborations include but are not limited to:

  • Centrally organized, targeted clinical interventions organized by the Population Health and Clinical Services Teams

  • New technology tools - piloting and implementation

  • Central marketing and growth initiatives

  • Organized activities of the Medical Director cohort and Medical Staff

  • Workgroups and organizational committees

  • Support Organizational Strategy : The RMD will have input into organizational-wide priority setting and projects, will join committees to plan or implement organization-wide efforts, and will lead regional implementation of care model programs activities.

  • Drive Culture : Oak Street Health fosters a culture of innovation and open dialogue, and works with urgency. RMDs support this culture and serve as role models for the center teams, emphasizing the interdisciplinary approach to meeting our mission.

What are we looking for?

Ideal candidates will satisfy the following:

  • M.D. / D.O. / DNP graduates, Physicians will be board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. DNPs should be certified in a primary care domain.

  • Fellowship training in Geriatrics and/or other professional degrees (e.g., M.B.A., J.D., M.P.H.) preferred but not required.

  • 8+ years of experience in outpatient practice strongly preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience in a management role or role as medical director, managing a medical group of 20 or more providers strongly preferred.

  • Experience with managed care and/or value-based practice and familiarity with payer-provider collaboration.

  • Experience using a metrics-driven approach to analyze cost, quality, and satisfaction data to drive clinical strategy and program redesign.

  • Commitment to our patient population and to low-income patients.

  • US work authorization.
