We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Board Certified or Residency Trained Oncologist to join our team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about providing high-quality veterinary care and possess excellent communication skills to build lasting relationships with our clients. You will work alongside a team of experienced veterinarians, technicians, and support staff and will work closely with the Hospital Manager and Regional Manager.

Location

Inland Valley Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Center (IVVS) in Upland, California is a 24‑hour specialty and emergency referral hospital. The newly renovated facility is equipped with full in‑house labs, high‑quality ultrasound, continuous ECG telemetry, a full range of endoscopy equipment, a Class II NuAire Biosafety Cabinet, and much more.

Key Responsibilities

• Comprehensive patient exams and medical work‑ups
• Client communication and education
• Maintaining accurate medical records
• Pharmacy duties such as prescribing medications to patients and following controlled substance protocols
• Promote teamwork and staff efficiency
• Work with the Hospital Manager on weekly priorities and expectations
• Evaluate and monitor protocols for the daily running of the hospital from intake to discharge
• Monitor cases and attend daily rounds when possible to be sure the highest standards are being upheld
• Participate in practice management updates and training at all levels
• Perform other duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications (Required)

• Veterinarian degree (DVM or VMD) from an accredited college or university
• 1‑year rotational internship in small animal medicine, surgery, ER (university or large referral practice)
• Completed a 3‑year, AVMA approved residency program
• Current State Veterinary License
• DEA registration must be obtained and maintained
• Strong diagnostic and clinical skills
• Ability to work well in a team‑oriented environment
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
• Commitment to providing compassionate and high‑quality veterinary care
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively, efficiently, and in a timely manner with all members of the Medical and Hospital staff
• Client communication skills, must be able to elicit information, establish rapport, offer explanations with pet owners
• Display confidence and reassurance when dealing with pets experiencing severe stress, illness, or pain
• May include some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling
• Some tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work
• Position does require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Pay Range

$180,000 - $200,000 USD

Salary Range: Competitive base salary of $223,000–$233,000 plus incentive bonus. Additional sign‑on bonus and relocation assistance available.

Division Overview

The Pediatric Gastroenterology Division comprises 4 full‑time physicians, 2 pediatric nurse practitioners, 4 full‑time nurses, and a part‑time dietitian. We collaborate closely with adult gastroenterologists, diagnostic and interventional radiologists, pathologists, pediatric surgeons, behavioral therapists, social workers, and child life specialists. Most procedures are performed in a state‑of‑the‑art outpatient endoscopy unit with anesthesia support. The division serves infants, children, and adolescents across a large catchment area and is the major tertiary referral center for 25 counties.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert clinical care for a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease, functional GI disorders, and complex pediatric conditions.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures—upper and lower GI endoscopy, esophageal pH (BRAVO), impedance studies, video capsule endoscopy, anorectal and esophageal manometry.
• Participate in the on‑call inpatient schedule (1 in 5 weeks).
• Engage in teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows in pediatric gastroenterology.
• Contribute to multidisciplinary clinics (aerodigestive, spina bifida, autism medical home).
• Lead or participate in clinical research and quality‑improvement projects to advance patient outcomes.
• Support the division’s academic mission through involvement in departmental and institutional initiatives.

Qualifications

• Board‑eligible or board‑certified in pediatric gastroenterology.
• Medical degree (MD or DO) with completed pediatric gastroenterology fellowship.
• Strong experience in endoscopic procedures and adult–child collaborative care.
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching and research.

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State – Territory – or Commonwealth of the United States – or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training – approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education – the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) – in the list published for the year the residency – or fellowship if applicable – was completed
• OR (2) One year of post medical school training (internship – first year of residency – or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post‑training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States
• OR (3) Non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement) – which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
• Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs)
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. – not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
• Rather – they are to have a “scope of practice” that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
• Additionally – surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
• In rare and unusual circumstances – the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer – who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience – accomplishments – performance – and qualifications warrant such action
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Preferred Experience: Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Oracle/CERNER Fellowship / Subspecialty Training (Reference:
• Physical Requirements: To perform in a fully successful manner – the individual must have the physical ability to perform job‑related duties which may require light carrying (under 15 pounds) – reaching above shoulder – use of fingers – both hands required – walking (up to 1 hour) – standing (up to 1 hour) – and both legs required
• In addition – there may be exposure to the following environmental factors: working inside and outside – working closely with others – and protracted or irregular hours of work
• A health examination must be successfully completed prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Occupational Health Clinic policy
• There may be intermittent exposure to blood and body fluids.

• This position is located within the Surgical Service in the General Surgery/ ENT Section at the Captain James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago – Illinois
• FHCC is larger than just a single facility – but rather a system of facilities throughout Northeastern Illinois which provide medical and dental services to U.S. Military Active Duty, Recruits, Veterans, and eligible beneficiaries
• Duties include but are not limited to: Evaluate – diagnose – admit – treat and manage patients with diseases, disorders and injuries of the ear, nose, throat, head and neck – including conditions involving the ears, facial skeleton, upper respiratory tract and upper alimentary system
• Provide non‑operative and operative care consistent with approved clinical privileges and within the capability and resources of a Level 1C facility
• Perform inpatient and outpatient consultations and follow‑up care for patients referred by other clinical services and affiliated outpatient clinic
• Provide emergency and on‑call otolaryngology services as assigned and consistent with granted privileges
• Order – interpret – and act upon diagnostic studies and implemented treatment plans consistent with VHA standards of care
• Educates and mentors medical students, interns, residents, technicians, and other physicians
• Participates in surgical staff briefings and contributes to continuous learning within the service
• Participate in interdisciplinary care coordination and collaboration with other services to ensure continuity of care
• Maintain current licensure, board certification (if applicable), credentialing, privileging and completion of all required mandatory education and training
• Work Schedule: Full‑time – Monday‑Friday – 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM – “on‑call” duties per VHA policy
