About Harbor Accounting Group

If you would like to know a bit more about this opportunity, or are considering applying, then please read the following job information.

Harbor Accounting Group is a growing CPA firm serving closely held businesses, entrepreneurs, high-net-worth individuals, and families.

We combine the resources and technology of a larger firm with the direct client relationships and accessibility of a local practice.

We are seeking a Tax Manager or Senior Tax Manager who wants more than a traditional review role. This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys preparing and reviewing tax returns, working directly with clients, solving problems, and managing engagements from start to finish.

Candidates with Big 4, national, regional, or strong local public accounting experience who are looking for greater ownership are especially encouraged to apply.

The Opportunity

You will work directly with business owners and individual clients across tax, accounting, and advisory matters.

Your work will include tax return preparation and review, tax planning, QuickBooks, payroll, sales tax, estimated taxes, PTET, and general business advisory.

We are looking for someone who wants to understand and manage the entire client relationship, not just one part of the engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1120, 1065, and 1041.
  • Handle individual and closely held business tax matters.
  • Perform year-round tax planning and projections.
  • Advise clients on estimated taxes, extensions, and New York State PTET.
  • Review QuickBooks files, financial statements, trial balances, and adjusting entries.
  • Assist with bookkeeping, payroll, and sales tax matters.
  • Research federal, state, and local tax issues.
  • Respond to IRS and state notices.
  • Manage engagements from information gathering through final delivery and e-filing.
  • Communicate directly with clients and resolve open items.
  • Review and mentor staff.
  • Work closely with partners on complex tax matters and client relationships.
  • Identify tax planning and advisory opportunities.
  • Help improve processes through technology, automation, and AI.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 6+ years of public accounting experience, with additional experience for Senior Manager candidates.
  • Strong experience preparing and reviewing Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1120, and 1065.
  • Form 1041 experience is a plus.
  • Experience with tax planning, projections, PTET, and multi-state compliance.
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks Desktop and/or QuickBooks Online.
  • Understanding of bookkeeping, trial balances, and adjusting entries.
  • Experience with payroll and sales tax matters.
  • Strong client communication and relationship-management skills.
  • Ability to manage engagements independently from start to finish.
  • Strong organizational and deadline-management skills.

Who Will Thrive Here

This role is ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation who is ready for broader responsibility and more direct client exposure.

You are comfortable reviewing the books, identifying accounting and tax issues, preparing the return, and speaking directly with the client about planning for the year ahead.

Most importantly, you take ownership of your work and your client relationships.

Why Harbor

Real ownership.

Manage client relationships and engagements from beginning to end.

Broader experience.

Work across tax, accounting, planning, payroll, sales tax, and advisory matters.

Direct partner access.

Work closely with firm leadership without multiple layers of management.

Harbor is expanding, creating meaningful opportunities for professionals who want to grow into larger leadership roles.

Modern technology.

We are investing in workflow, automation, and AI to make our professionals more effective.

Your ideas matter.
