Director Engineering, Logistics

Compensation: 210.000 - 320.000

Stord is The Consumer Experience Company, powering seamless checkout through delivery for today's leading brands. Stord is rapidly growing and is on track to double our revenue in the next 18 months. To meet and exceed this target, Stord is strategically scaling teams across the entire company, and seeking energetic experts to help us achieve our mission.

By combining comprehensive commerce-enablement technology with high-volume fulfillment services, Stord provides brands a platform to compete with retail giants. Stord manages over $10 billion of commerce annually through its fulfillment, warehousing, transportation, and operator-built software suite including OMS, Pre- and Post-Purchase, and WMS platforms. Stord is leveling the playing field for all brands to deliver the best consumer experience at scale.

With Stord, brands can increase cart conversion, improve unit economics, and drive sustained customer loyalty. Stord’s end-to-end commerce solutions combine best-in-class omnichannel fulfillment and shipping with leading technology to ensure fast shipping, reliable delivery promises, easy access to more channels, and improved margins on every order.

Hundreds of leading DTC and B2B companies like AG1, True Classic, Native, Seed Health, quip, goodr, Sundays for Dogs, and more trust Stord to deliver industry‑leading consumer experiences on every order. Stord is headquartered in Atlanta with facilities across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Stord is backed by top‑tier investors including Kleiner Perkins, Franklin Templeton, Founders Fund, Strike Capital, Baillie Gifford, and Salesforce Ventures.

Stord is building the operating system for modern supply chain: a unified platform handling Order Management, Warehouse Management, Transportation, and Consumer Experience for brands doing over $10B in commerce annually.

The Logistics Group sits at the center of that platform. It owns Billing, TMS, WMS, and LMS, the four systems that determine whether Stord can bill accurately, move freight efficiently, run warehouses well, and keep labor costs in check across a fulfillment network spanning the US, Canada, and the UK, with more international expansion ahead. None of these problems are fully solved. Billing is mid‑automation in partnership with Finance. TMS is building a standalone system alongside the Parcel team that will cut carrier spend now and create new revenue later. LMS is building the system that will materially lower cost‑to‑serve across the network. WMS is scaling the core engine that runs the fulfillment operation today, in real time, for real customers.

This role is for an engineer who became a leader, not a leader who happened to come from engineering. You'll manage five engineering managers and a Principal Engineer, but you'll be expected to understand the systems your teams are building well enough to ask the right questions, spot the wrong architectural call before it ships, and step into a hard technical conversation without needing a translator. You'll also be expected to build real relationships with Finance, Parcel, and other cross‑functional partners rather than waiting for those relationships to be handed to you. If you've led engineering organizations through real growth, you still think like an engineer, and you're not afraid to make a hard call on a team that isn't performing, this role was built for you.

Why This Role

  • You'll lead one of the most consequential parts of Stord's business at a moment when the company is growing fast and the stakes for getting Logistics right have never been higher.

  • Billing automation isn't a side project here. It's a core initiative with Finance that changes how accurately and quickly Stord gets paid.

  • The TMS and Parcel standalone build is a rare chance to own a system that both saves the company money today and has a credible path to generating new revenue.

  • LMS gives you a direct line from engineering work to bottom‑line warehouse cost savings across the entire network, not just one site.

  • WMS puts you in charge of the platform powering live fulfillment operations across North America and the UK, with more international growth on the roadmap.

  • You'll inherit a strong bench (five managers and a Principal Engineer) and have real authority to shape how that org performs, not just maintain it.

What You'll Do

Org & Talent Leadership

  • Own performance and accountability across five engineering managers and a Principal Engineer, setting a clear bar for what good looks like on each team.

  • Coach your managers directly: give them the feedback, support, and stretch opportunities they need to grow into stronger leaders.

  • Set a high bar and act decisively when someone, manager or IC, isn't meeting it. Enable people as much as you can; don't carry someone who isn't pulling their weight.

  • Make organizational design calls (team boundaries, reporting lines, role definitions) as the group's scope and headcount evolve.

Billing Automation

  • Partner directly with Finance leadership to drive the end‑to‑end automation of Stord's billing process.

  • Hold the Billing team accountable to a roadmap that materially reduces manual billing work and billing errors.

  • Surface and resolve the cross‑functional blockers that typically stall finance‑engineering initiatives.

TMS / Parcel Standalone Build

  • Own delivery of the standalone TMS system being built alongside the Parcel team.

  • Push the team toward the cost‑saving milestones this system needs to hit, while keeping the longer‑term revenue opportunity in view.

  • Get close enough to the technical approach to catch problems early, not after they've shipped.

LMS Network Efficiency

  • Drive the LMS roadmap toward measurable, network‑wide reductions in warehouse cost‑to‑serve.

  • Connect LMS work to real operational outcomes by building a working relationship with warehouse operations leadership.

  • Prioritize ruthlessly between LMS features that move the cost needle and ones that don't.

WMS Platform Scale

  • Own the technical health and roadmap of the core WMS powering Stord's live fulfillment network across the US, Canada, and the UK.

  • Make the platform investment decisions (reliability, performance, technical debt) needed to support continued international growth.

  • Keep the team's execution predictable enough that the rest of the business can plan around it.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Engineering depth, not just management experience. You were a strong, hands‑on engineer earlier in your career, and you still understand R&D processes, languages, and technologies well enough to engage in real technical conversations, even though you're not writing production code day to day.

  • Active problem‑solving, not delegation by default. You jump into hard problems yourself. If a team is stuck, you're in the room figuring out why, not waiting for a status update.

  • Cross‑functional relationship building. You build real working relationships with partners like Finance and Parcel rather than relying on org charts. This is not optional in this role; it's a condition of succeeding in it.

  • Organizational leadership at scale. You've managed managers before, ideally across more than one product domain, and you know how to drive consistency and standards across a multi‑team org.

  • A track record of driving outcomes, not activity. You can point to specific business results (cost savings, revenue, delivery predictability) that your organizations produced under your leadership.

Required Soft Skills

  • Ownership & Accountability: You own outcomes, not just activities. When your team ships, you take pride. When something breaks, you take responsibility and fix the system.

  • Strong Communication: You communicate clearly with engineers, PMs, and executives. You translate technical complexity into business language and vice versa.

  • Delegation & Multiplication: You scale through people, not heroics. You have a history of developing team members and multiplying impact through others.

  • Navigating Ambiguity: You set direction when requirements are evolving. You build alignment across teams and functions without formal authority.

  • Balanced Judgment: You balance innovation with pragmatic delivery constraints. You know when to push for quality and when to ship.

  • Directed AI‑Assisted Development: You understand how AI coding tools work as a productivity multiplier and can guide your team's adoption while maintaining quality and independent technical judgment.

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience leading engineering in logistics, supply chain, fulfillment, or another high‑throughput operational domain.

  • Direct experience partnering with Finance on billing, invoicing, or revenue‑critical systems.

  • Experience scaling an engineering org across multiple countries or regulatory environments.

  • A demonstrated ability to grow Engineers and improve the velocity of teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience with transportation management, parcel/carrier systems, or warehouse labor management systems specifically.

  • Familiarity with high‑growth, PE‑or VC‑backed environments where priorities shift quickly.

  • Prior experience standing up a net‑new system (build vs. buy decision) inside an existing platform.

What Success Looks Like

  • 30 days: You've built a real working relationship with each of your five managers and the Principal Engineer, formed an honest view of where each team (Billing, TMS, WMS, LMS) stands, and identified the one or two biggest risks to delivery.

  • 90 days: You've made at least one consequential call, organizational, technical, or people‑related, that visibly improves how one of your teams operates. Finance and Parcel partners see you as a reliable counterpart, not a name on an org chart.

  • 6 months: Billing automation, the TMS/Parcel build, LMS efficiency work, and WMS scaling are all moving on credible, predictable timelines. Your managers are stronger leaders than when you arrived, and you've established yourself as a trusted voice in Stord's engineering leadership team.

About Stord

Stord is a cloud‑based supply chain platform that enables brands to compete and grow through end‑to‑end logistics solutions. We process over $10B in commerce annually and operate across Order Management (OMS), Warehouse Management (WMS), Transportation Management (TMS), Consumer Experience, and Demand Planning.
