Staff / Principal Machine Learning Engineer, Serving
Inworld AI
mountain view, ca
Compensation: 270.000 - 500.000

Who We're Looking For

A year ago, reliably working agentic systems and sub-second multimodal inference at scale barely existed. Nobody has a decade of experience here. So we're not screening for a resume template — we're looking for strong people from varied backgrounds who learn fast, thrive in ambiguity, and can show us what they've built, broken, and understood.

Experience We Find Useful

You don't need all of this. But you need enough to make a case.

  • Inference Optimization. Deep understanding of modern serving frameworks and techniques like vLLM or TRT-LLM.
  • Model Acceleration . Hands-on experience with quantization, distillation, caching strategies, continuous batching, paged attention, and speculative decoding.
  • High-Performance Systems. Proficiency in C++, CUDA, Rust, or highly optimized Python. You know how to profile code and squeeze every ounce of performance out of NVIDIA GPUs.
  • Distributed Systems & Scaling. Experience with Kubernetes, Ray, custom load balancing, multi-GPU/multi-node inference, and reliably handling thousands of concurrent connections.
  • Public work. Non-trivial systems programming projects, open-source contributions to major inference engines, or deep-dive technical write-ups.
  • Full-cycle ownership. You can take a model from the research team, containerize it, optimize its serving, and ensure it runs reliably in production.
  • Background. PhD in CS, Physics, Math, or equivalent practical experience building backend or ML systems.

Who Thrives Here

  • You don’t need a roadmap to start walking; you’re comfortable picking a direction and building the map as you go.
  • You believe engineering isn't finished until it’s shipped and stable. You have a bias for impact over purely theoretical optimizations.
  • You don't just ship code; you obsess over the why. You’re the first to question an architecture if you think there’s a better way to solve the core latency or throughput problem.
  • You aren't satisfied with "the PM said so." You thrive on deep context and want to understand the fundamental logic behind every decision we make.

What Working Here Is Like

We hand you unclear problems and expect you to make them clear. We value engineers who say "I don't know yet" and then design the benchmark or prototype that finds out. We treat performance, latency, and reliability as first-class product features, not a box to check before launch. Impact comes before everything else, though we support sharing work and open-source contributions that move the field forward. Your work should be visible. Flat structure, fast iterations, minimal process theater.

We believe in the power of in-person collaboration to solve the hardest problems and foster a strong team culture. We offer relocation assistance and look forward to you joining us in our Mountain View office.

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary range for this full-time position is $270,000 - $500,000+ bonus + equity + benefits.

In this role, you will help productionize AI features through governance, telemetry, automated evaluation, adversarial testing, and responsible AI frameworks. You will contribute to the design and implementation of safeguards, guardrails, and hallucination‑mitigation techniques, and support controls that monitor drift, enforce safe model behavior, and maintain transparency across the AI lifecycle—ensuring AI capabilities are measurable, trustworthy, and aligned with emerging regulatory expectations.

Head of Cybernetics
Formlabs
somerville, ma
Compensation: 200.000 - 300.000

About Formlabs

To reinvent an industry, you have to build the best team. Join Formlabs to be part of our mission to build the tools that enable anyone to bring their ideas to life.

Each Formlabs printer is a precision machine —a seamless orchestration of optics, mechanics, and chemistry. Its intelligence is driven by the critical layer in between: the firmware interpreting sensor data, the electrical architecture linking subsystems, and the integration layer that transforms individual components into a reliable tool for surgeons, engineers, and manufacturers worldwide.

This is our printer’s nervous system, and we are searching for the leader to own its evolution.

Norbert Wiener coined the term cybernetics at MIT in 1948 to capture the idea of control systems across artificial and biological systems, kicking off decades of progress in this area. Over time, it has been broken down into narrow professional disciplines, including high-level software, embedded software, digital hardware design, analog hardware design, and mechanical engineering. It’s time to reunite these fields to refocus on the goal - make systems flexible, robust, and intelligent.

What You’ll Do

  • Ship amazing products that are loved by customers and make a dent in the universe by making it easier for people to go from an idea to a real thing.
  • Scale a world-class cybernetics engineering team , leading embedded engineering, systems integration, and electrical engineering globally.
  • Solve for Performance . Drive the embedded and electrical breakthroughs that enable our printers to do what others think is impossible.
  • Build the Brain. Create a modular architecture (main boards, chipsets, peripherals) that scales across our entire ecosystem.
  • Iterate at Speed. Move from "what if" to a working prototype faster than anyone else in the industry.

About You

  • You've shipped complex electromechanical products to production in high-performance environments — you understand what changes when you go from prototype to 100,000 units in the field.
  • You have built high-performance teams.
  • You are impatient and want to ship great products quickly.
  • You are customer-obsessed , with a deep focus on the business to ensure we are building the right solutions for our customers.
  • You dive deep into technical details across engineering and physics domains.

Bonus Skills

  • Passion and experience in 3D printing
  • Entrepreneurial experience that taught you what it takes to scale a business.

Our Benefits & Perks

  • Robust equity program to build future wealth through RSUs
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • 401K matching and access to financial advisors
  • Generous paid Parental Leave (up to 16 weeks)
  • Tenure-based paid Sabbatical Leave (up to 6 weeks)
  • Flexible Out of Office Plan – Take time when you need it
  • Ample on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Healthy on-site lunches, snacks, beverages, & treats
  • Regularly sponsored professional development opportunities
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And of course… unlimited 3D prints

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing, please apply. Help us build an inclusive community that will change the face of 3D printing.

Compensation

We are all owners of Formlabs and direct beneficiaries of our success. We believe that equity is a critical component of compensation at Formlabs, and we want our newest team members to understand the potential value of their equity compensation. Full time employees receive equity, in the form of RSUs. Your financial investment will grow with us in accordance to your impact.

At Formlabs, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization.
